With Nikon’s S line getting four new cameras and the L line getting three new cameras, we’re left with the single camera update to Nikon’s Performance (P) line. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 features 10 megapixel resolution, a 3.5x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD, and plenty of advanced features meant to appeal to the enthusiast or someone who wants a compact camera to take along when they’re tired of carrying their “big”

If it??™s true that you can??™t tell a book by its cover, then the diminutive Canon Powershot SD900 just seems too small and compact to be packing a 10 megapixel wallop. But large file size is only part of the story for a little camera that produces excellent images and color right out of the box.

Actually, the cover is pretty cool on its own ??“ the SD900 case is titanium, with its medium grey sheen complemented nicely by bright chrome and flat black accents. Build quality, fit and finish appear first-rate. The camera features a 2.5??? LCD monitor and an optical viewfinder, a 10 megapixel sensor and 3X optical Canon zoom lens that provides a 35mm film equivalent focal length range of 37 to 111 mm. Canon claims the DIGIC III image processor provides improved image quality, speed of operation and battery performance over earlier processors.

While the megapixel war has more or less cooled off, there are still sales people out there who are pushing the “more megapixels is better” line to first time digital camera buyers or digital camera owners who are upgrading from older digital cameras. I see this just about every day on our forums where people, when comparing a 6 megapixel camera to a 8 megapixel camera, that the 8 megapixel camera is the one to go with.

The newly announced Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 will be, in my opinion, a very welcome update to its predecessor the TZ1. Panasonic has done a lot more than just give the TZ1 a resolution upgrade. The new TZ3 still features a 10x optical zoom, but also allows wide angle shooting (28mm equivalent) and brings the 3 inch screen to the show. It also shoots at up to 7.2 megapixels and includes Panasonic’s MEGA O.I.S image stabilization system and Intelligent ISO Control.
The TZ3 has a slightly larger sensor than other cameras in the 7 megapixel class. The larger sensor allows the camera to shoot in a variety of aspect ratios: 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 and still retain as much image data as possible.

One of eight new Panasonic cameras announced today, the ultra-zoom Lumix DMC-FZ8 is the successor to the FZ7. It features a 12x optical zoom with optical image stabilization, 7.2 megapixel resolution, 2.5 inch LCD, and a new Panasonic LSI Venus Engine III processor for better response times and quicker operation over its predecessor.
In the midst of 8 new Lumix digital cameras from Panasonic, they’re also updating the LZ line and an LS model. The Lumix DMC-LZ7, Lumix DMC-LZ6, and Lumix DMC-LS70 all feature what Panasonic is calling Intelligent Image Stabilization. Intelligent Image Stabilization is accomplished with the combination of optical image stabilization to counteract camera shake and Intelligent ISO Control to counteract subject movement. All of the new Lumix models include this technology.
